Vocals & Bass
Luis Bonilla is a born and raised Venezuelan native. At the age of 8, he already had been playing and learning the acoustic guitar. He later joined his school’s folk music group, and by his early teens was influenced by rock bands of the 70s & 80s, which made him pick up the bass and the electric guitar.
Later on, Bonilla collaborated with his brother, Ricardo Bonilla and developed an electronic latin rock duo, called Diestra. Diestra’s first album won Mcdonald’s’ “Lo Maximo De La Musica Latina” (Best of Latin Music) contest, a nationwide talent search for new artists and songwriters. This brought exposure to the group; which followed many other opportunities including a performance during the 2000 Latin Grammy party, a commercial for McDonald’s and many TV appearances on major hispanic television Networks in the United States. Eventually their success was followed by concerts and performances in North America and South America. Immediately after the release of Diestra‘s 2nd album, Luis’s brother and vocalist, Ricardo, passed away. This unexpected event sent Diestra into indefinite hiatus.
Since then, Bonilla has resided in South Florida and for the past three years, he has been the front man for his new rock band, The VON. The band has played intensely locally throughout South Florida and is working on a 2016 Nationwide tour. The VON has independently released an EP and is now preparing to release brand new recorded material produced by Bonilla and mixed by Grammy Award winning engineer, Carlos “El Loco” Bedoya. Immediate plans for The VON include releasing singles, East Coast tour in the Fall of 2015 as well as a 2016 Nationwide tour to promote the new album.
